about this tour

about this tour

This journey through Ghana offers a meaningful connection to culture, heritage, and community life. From the forests of the Ashanti region to the shoreline of Cape Coast, the experience brings together local traditions, historical understanding, and thoughtful reflection. In Ashanti villages, respected artisans welcome you into their work as they hand weave distinctive Kente cloth and print Adinkra symbols using long established techniques. At brass casting workshops, generations of knowledge are evident as metal is shaped with tools and methods passed down through families. These moments provide more than observation, giving you direct insight into the people who sustain Ghana’s creative heritage. Along the coast, the legacy of the transatlantic slave trade is approached with honesty and care. Visits to Assin Manso, Cape Coast Castle, and Elmina Castle reveal the difficult histories held within these sites and the stories connected to the surrounding rivers and shores. A traditional naming ceremony led by local elders offers a respectful way to acknowledge ancestry and community ties. Natural settings add balance throughout the route, whether walking through the rainforest canopy at Kakum, spending time along quiet stretches of beach, or watching fishing boats return to Elmina’s harbor. In Ghana’s cities, the past and present meet through museums, markets, and neighbourhoods that show daily routines, shared memory, and the pace of communities growing toward the future.

Visit the village of Adanwomase, known for its long tradition of Kente weaving. Families have passed down their skills for generations, using handlooms that have stayed the same for centuries. Learn about the cultural meaning behind different patterns, including one named after former U.S. President Bill Clinton. This stop offers a closer look at the techniques and stories woven into each piece of fabric. You’ll also have the chance to see weavers at work and ask questions about their daily process.

Assin Monso and Cape Coast Castle

Today's guided tour begins with a visit to Assin Manso, an important stop along the transatlantic slave trade route. Enslaved Africans from northern Ghana, Burkina Faso, and Niger were brought here in chains, often in poor health after walking hundreds of kilometers. At the Ndonkor Nsuo (Slave River), they were bathed and assessed before continuing the final leg to the coastal forts. In 1998, the remains of two formerly enslaved Africans—Samuel Carson from the U.S. and Crystal from Jamaica—were returned and reburied here in a symbolic homecoming. We then continue to Cape Coast Castle, a site that held more enslaved Africans than any other in West Africa. Up to 600 men, women, and children were held in dark, overcrowded dungeons beneath the governor’s church, waiting to be taken through the “Door of No Return” to the Americas. A visit here is deeply moving and provides a powerful insight into the past. At the local shrine in the end dungeon, there’s space to reflect and pay respects. The onsite museum provides further historical context, and literature is available for those wishing to learn more. After checking in at our hotel, dine at a local restaurant, or simply unwind at the hotel on the Cape Coast.
