Head north and the coast becomes increasingly remote, leading towards the Skeleton Coast and the sparsely populated landscapes of Kaokoland.
In Damaraland, experienced guides track desert-adapted elephants through dry river systems, and at Twyfelfontein you can see thousands of rock engravings created by hunter-gatherer communities over several thousand years. Etosha National Park is one of Namibia’s principal wildlife areas, with elephant, giraffe, zebra, antelope and rhino gathering around its waterholes and lions ranging across the surrounding plains.
Namibia changes again in the northeast. Rivers and wetlands cross the Zambezi Region, supporting elephants, hippos, crocodiles and abundant birdlife. National parks including Bwabwata and Nkasa Rupara add a very different safari environment to the dry landscapes found across much of the country.
