What we love about
Mozambique
Located between Tanzania and South Africa, Mozambique is best known for its beautiful white sand beaches, gemstone mining and seafaring history. Turquoise waters are a paradise for snorkelers and scuba divers in search of shoals of colorful fish and pristine corals rising from the seabed. Go sailing beneath the flapping canvas sails on a traditional dhow or take a surfing lesson on the predictable surf further south. Maputo is the country’s cosmopolitan waterfront capital. Modern high-rises and ancient landmarks share an atmosphere of neglect as you get up-close. Main attractions include Maputo Fortress (now an interesting museum), Central Market, Tunduru Gardens and Independence Square. The turn-of-the-century architecture reflects Mozambique’s Portuguese colonial past. The smart palm-lined promenade would look at home in any Mediterranean city while the port has a mixture of working and pleasure boats. National Parks are working hard to restore their wildlife populations after the ravages of the civil war while the most rewarding place for bird–spotting is boating down the Urema River.
