Leaving Tortuguero and Journey to the Arenal Volcano

After breakfast you will travel by boat through the verdant waterways of Tortuguero on a 1.5-hour ride back to the mainland. Arriving at the port, your lodge's shared shuttle bus will take you to a lunch restaurant near Guapiles (lunch is not included). Here you will change vehicles to your own private transfer and then continue your drive for about 4-hours to Costa Rica's Arenal Volcano.

Along the way, admire the agricultural landscapes and pineapple plantations. You will make a stop at a local organic pineapple farm where you will learn about the history and cultivation of pineapple. You will of course also try this delicious fresh pineapple fruit.

As you approach the town of La Fortuna, one of the first things you'll see is the Arenal Volcano. Although it is no longer spewing out hot lava your first sighting of the sleeping giant will always be the most memorable as it rises up high above the surrounding landscape. Upon your arrival to the town of La Fortuna, situated at the foot of the Arenal Volcano and having settled in to your accommodation, the rest of the day is free to relax.

Volunteer and Learn at the Wildlife Rescue Center

This morning you will be giving a helping hand to some of Costa Rica's wildlife! The conservation and protection of wildlife is an important part of Costa Rican culture. You will be picked up at your hotel and go for a 50-minute drive through the Costa Rican countryside to the Wildlife Rescue Institute. Here you will be warmly welcomed by the local staff and volunteers working at the project, before starting an educational tour where you will have an up-close experience and learn about Costa Rican wildlife. The Project is a non-profit organization, dedicated to wildlife protection, environmental conservation, and fostering positive cultural exchanges through education and service. It serves as an animal rescue center, Spanish language school and volunteer center. The overall aim is to give the injured wild animals the care and respect that they deserve while rehabilitating them in order to release them back into the wild and educating the public on the struggle of these animals, to help restore the balance between man and nature. The rescue institute receives no financial aid from the Costa Rican government, so they are dependent on the money and manpower of volunteers to care for injured animals and keep the wildlife rescue institute alive. Your local guide will explain in detail about each creature's territory, lifespan, type of diet, social behavior as well as the possibilities and considerations to re-introduce the animals back into the wild. To get even more involved with the project, you'll have the chance to participate in some volunteer work, helping with the preparation of the food for the animals and feeding them! After this rewarding experience, you will be transferred back to your hotel.

The afternoon is free to enjoy at your hotel.
