about this tour
about this tour
This 13 day journey through Latvia, Estonia, and Lithuania offers an introduction to the cultures, landscapes, and historic sites that define the Baltic States. Beginning in Lithuania, you travel through Vilnius with its Baroque Old Town, continue to Trakai Castle, and visit the Hill of Crosses before moving through towns linked to local crafts and rural heritage. In Latvia, the itinerary features Klaipeda, the Curonian Spit, and traditional homesteads where you learn about crafts, linen making, and coastal life. Time in Liepaja, Aizpute, Kuldiga, and Riga combines city walks, open air museums, and the region’s long standing traditions, including herbal practices and countryside customs. The route also includes the Kemeri Moor with wooden walkways through peat landscapes. Crossing into Estonia, you explore Parnu, visit a Siberian style farmstead, and travel towards Tallinn where the medieval Old Town and its fortification walls offer insight into Baltic culture. A visit to the Estonian Open Air Museum shows rural life through restored farm buildings and village structures by the sea. Near Lake Peipus, you learn about Russian Old Believer communities and the cultural blend along the Onion Route. Throughout the journey, guided visits, museum stops, nature walks, and cultural sessions offer a balance of learning and leisure, giving you a clear sense of how identity, tradition, and landscape shape life across the Baltic States today.

Latvian cultural traditions, rooted in over two and a half millennia, are best experienced away from urban and modern settings. Guide Andris Geidāns, with 25 years of field experience, has created a peaceful Green Lodge deep in an ancient forest. Guests enjoy fresh, locally sourced food, carefully prepared and served in an authentic atmosphere. As the kokle plays, Andris shares stories, symbols, and meanings from Latvian folklore and mythology—offering a thoughtful and memorable look into a culture shaped by nature and time.

The Onion Route & The Old BelieversAfter breakfast at the hotel, you will travel to a village near Lake Peipus, where Estonian peasant culture blends with the traditions of Russian Old Believers. This unique area, along the Onion Route, has been home to a peaceful coexistence of Estonians, Russian Old Believers, and Baltic Germans for over 300 years. You will explore the cultural richness of the region, with its distinct mix of traditions reflected in the local architecture, crafts, and cuisine. A visit to the Old Believers' Museum offers insight into the area’s heritage, and you’ll have the chance to try a traditional Onion pie. The Alatskivi Castle, whose luxury stands in stark contrast to the Old Believers’ modest lifestyle, will be a highlight of the day. Afterward, you will continue to Tartu before returning to Tallinn for the night.
